THE TONY STEWERT RACING TEAM
Goal: Manage graphics project for Home Depot's 5 show trailers highlighting their sponsorship of the Tony Stewart racing team. Create images for a viewing distance of 9 feet and less.
Initial Observations: Custom built trailers with no rivets or exterior brackets. Layout created by Sam Bass really sets the racing theme. The white on the sides would be painted which meant that the white in the image would have to be trimmed out by hand after printing the image and before installation.
Materials: 3M Scotchprint graphics, computer cut vinyl and interior translucent vinyl.
Production: We printed the race car images on 6 panels (per side) and plotter cut the rest of the logos. Nearly every logo is 3 colors including the sign board on top of the trailer. Installation of the graphics took much longer than anticipated due to the multiple layers of colors and the fact that the sign board has decals on both sides. On the second and third trailers instead of cutting the logos we printed them using the 3M Scotchprint process. We did this so the installation could be completed in a day. We put an orange box behind each logo to match the paint on the trailer. After a half day of color matching and lots of material, we were able to match and print the the same color of orange on the trailer.
The image of the race car was color enhanced to help the car "pop" off the side of the trailer. A full size panel measuring 50"by 127" was printed at 400 dpi and used as a proof for the final image. The windshield was darkened as well.
Conclusion: The digital printing process for the logos was the right decision. Installation took a full day and went very smoothly. The colors matched the trailer exactly. So well in fact that the employees of the local Home Depot asked how all those logos and the race car were painted on the trailer.
